Cutting Edge

Ever wondered how die cuts were made?

Here is a description of the process from Glasgow's own die cut company - ABC Print and Craft.

The die cuts are first printed using a method called hot foil printing. The image is first drawn as a line art drawing and sent to the blockmaker. A metal plate or block is then made. The next step is to send the artwork to the form maker to have a cutter made. The block is then attached to the heater block of the machine and a roll of coloured foil is put on. The image is transferred to the card by a combination of the correct foil, pressure and temperature for the card stock being used. The cutter is then put on and lined up and the shapes are then cut.

ABC Print and Craft are the sole Scottish outlet for an English based company with whom they have been trading for almost four years. However they only started selling the die cuts in October 2001. Starting with a stand at the S.E.C.C. in Glasgow. Their client base has been growing steadily ever since.
